What the day trip includes and leaves out

The shared day trip we link to is a transport product, not a guided tour. It includes round-trip transport from Fez in an air-conditioned vehicle, hotel pickup and drop-off, fuel, and a driver who speaks English and French. It does not include a local guide, lunch or entrance fees, so a visit to the kasbah museum would be extra. The whole day takes about 12 hours, with about four hours of free time in Chefchaouen. How pickup works in Fez

The trip includes hotel pickup, but vehicles cannot reach every part of Fez. Fez el-Bali, the old walled medina, is described as the world's largest car-free urban zone, with only a few points reachable by car. If you stay inside it, you wait at a meeting point near one of the medina gates rather than at your riad's door. The operator contacts you the evening before, by WhatsApp or email, to confirm the exact time and place. Keep your phone on and check your messages the night before.

Going by intercity bus

Direct buses link Fez and Chefchaouen, and the ride takes around four hours. Fez has two main departure points: the old Gare Routière just outside the medina, and the CTM terminal in the new town. Many visitors prefer CTM for reliability, while other companies cover more routes. Departure times can change from one day to the next, so ask at the counter. People usually book the day before or earlier in the day, and popular departures can fill up. At the Fez station, touts may offer you Chefchaouen tickets. Buy at the ticket counter instead.

Arriving by bus: check where it stops

Chefchaouen's bus station is an uphill walk from the medina, and petit taxis usually wait at the entrance. Check the destination on your ticket. Some buses on the Fez to Tétouan and Tangier road stop at Derdara, about 8 km from Chefchaouen, where you then need a grand taxi into town. Travellers have also reported that Supratours coaches, which connect with trains, run only as far as Tétouan and Fez. Confirm that your bus actually ends in Chefchaouen before you pay.

Grand taxis and hire cars

Grand taxis are shared intercity cars that carry six passengers, with fares charged per seat. Chefchaouen has a stand for Tétouan and Tangier next to the main bus station, and cars also arrive from Meknes by way of Ouezzane. We found no direct grand-taxi route from Fez, so from Fez the bus is the independent choice. If you hire a car, expect small, unsignposted car parks around the edge of the medina, tended by people who call themselves guardians. The medina itself is for walking.

Day trip or a night in town?

Chefchaouen is compact and easy to walk, and many people come just for the walking. A day trip gives you about four hours and a fixed return, which covers the main square, the kasbah, the lanes and the spring. A night in town gives you the early morning and the evening as well. The Spanish Mosque on its hill is a popular sunset viewpoint, and a fixed return departure leaves no room to wait for the evening light. If you stay, book ahead for mid-July to September, when rooms can be tight.

From Tangier, Tétouan or somewhere else

Buses reach Chefchaouen from Tétouan, Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes and other towns. From Tangier, a grand taxi takes about two and a half hours. The day trip we link departs from Fez, so if Tangier is your base, compare the options from Tangier instead of adding a transfer to Fez.
